Dr Arunaz Kumar is an Obstetrician Delivering Services To Women Near Monash Medical Centre, and Waverley Private Hospital

Obstetrics is a field of medical practice that involves prenatal care during pregnancy, and helping with the birthing process. An obstetrician observes the general health and well-being of the woman throughout her pregnancy, during the process of labour and delivery, and also after baby is born. Obstetricians possess a high level of specialised training and education in their field.

Most patients begin visiting an obstetrician during the first trimester of pregnancy. This particular visit is actually the longest, and will need a variety of tests and examinations. An ultrasound will be conducted to verify the age of the fetus, blood screening tests will be advised to verify the basic levels of haemoglobin, and the patient’s blood type and to screen for any diseases. In certain cases, chronic villi sampling test or CVS test may be conducted to look for chromosomal abnormalities. At this point, you will also decide the hospital to book for your delivery.

Most pregnant women will be asked to see their obstetricians once a month through the second trimester. During these visits, basic exams and tests will be conducted to rule out chromosomal abnormalities. Obstetricians will order an ultrasound near twenty weeks in order to check the progress of the fetus and check for malformations, if they exist. An amniocentesis may sometimes be recommended if major malformations are suspected.

Our Monash based female obstetrician, Dr. Kumar will measure the fetus to ensure the weight and size in normal and progressing properly when the woman reaches her third trimester. Obstetricians also advise glucose tolerance test, or GTT in order to determine if the lady is at risk of developing the condition of gestational diabetes. Blood pressure is also observed to look for signs of preeclampsia, and the doctor will also listen to the heartbeat of the fetus. Obstetricians will also perform examinations and manoeuvres to determine how the baby is positioned.

Obstetricians use ultrasound to verify the general health and well-being of the fetus. Obstetricians monitor:

  • The amount of fluid around the fetus
  • Functioning of the heart and also ensuring normal development.
  • Needles that may be required to insert for CVS tests or amniocentesis.
  • The health and location of the placenta.

Obstetricians are proficient enough to handle issues and emergencies like:

  • Ectopic pregnancies
  • Preeclampsia and eclampsia
  • Placental abruption
  • Fetal distress

Towards the end of the pregnancy, Dr Kumar will help the woman with the process of labour and delivery. In certain cases, this indicates a vaginal delivery while at times a caesarean section may be needed. She may allow a labour to begin on its own, or she may induce labour by using different types of medications. Labour induction is mandatory if the pregnancy has lasted too long or if there’s a specific medical issue that may cause problems if the child is not delivered quickly.

Postnatal care is care of the woman after birth till six weeks later. It is very important that women and their babies are well looked after in the postnatal period. In the early postnatal period, support regarding breastfeeding and general physical and mental wellbeing are crucial. Dr Kumar will continue to provide support after birth and then review at 6 weeks in one of her clinics in the Monash area.
